FARA (Forum for Agriculture Research in Africa) is the champion for the ALive Research activity and is in charge of developing key research proposals on animal health in sub-Saharan Africa. After a consultative and participative process, FARA has identified 3 research topics, which are:
RP1- Development of highly sensitive diagnostic methods for Contagious Bovine Peri-Pneumonia (CBPP) in order to improve livestock productivity and market access; RP2- Improved access to markets for African livestock/livestock products through SPS equivalents and risk assessment; and RP3- Establishment of a learning system to capture and enhance knowledge of pitfalls and best practices in controlling outbreaks of emerging diseases affecting livestock trade: in the case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.
Regarding this last topic, FARA has just produced an elaborated DRAFT proposal.
In the spirit of the ALive Platform, which aims at establishing common and consensual proposals for the development of livestock in Africa, all comments on this proposal are very welcome and encouraged. Please kindly send your comments to the ALive Secretariat or directly to Ralph Von Kaufmann (FARA) before December 25, 2006.
