CONCEPT

The document hereby defines the concept of the ALi ve partnership.

In the first chapter, it explains the general context of livestock in Africa (see also Context ) and also the possible approaches for development.

In chapter 2, it identifies the main constraints affecting the livestock sector development.

Chapter 3 and 4 describe the ALive platform, which was presented as a response to the constraints mentioned earlier. They also provide details on the three themes of the partnership (see also Themes and Activities ) and describe briefly the operational principles (see also Operational Guidelines ).

The last chapter presents the arguments and advantages of the different stakeholders in livestock development of Africa to get involved in the initiative.

The ALive concept, initiated by the World Bank, was the product of a long consultation process, not only inside the institution itself but also outside, among all the stakeholders concerned (African institutions, donors, civil society,…). The document currently presented has integrated all the comments given through consultations and was officially approved at the General Assembly during the official launch of the ALive platform May 31-June 1, 2004 in Paris.

T he ALive Concept Note is a living document and all comments able to make it evolve positively are welcome ( secretariat@alive-online.org ). Comments are reviewed and approved by the ALive Executive Committee before being inserted in the document.
