The Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources of the African Union (AU-IBAR) hosted the Seventeenth Executive Committee and the Sixth Ordinary General Assembly meetings of the ALive platform from 5 to 7 April 2011, back to back.

17th Executive Committee  

The seventeenth session of the Executive Committee of the platform was held on 5-6 April 2011 under the supervision of Mr Christer Hermansson, Chairperson of the Executive Committee. He highlighted the progress made in implementation of the Triennial Action Plan (TAP) 2010-2012 and also appealed to all members of the platform to mobilize more resources to achieve targets set out in the TAP taking the example multilateral cooperation and partnership that led to the eradication of rinderpest in the world, particularly in Africa.

It was the opportunity for the ALive Secretariat to present (i) its activity report for the period December 2010 - March 2011, (ii) the progress made in the implementation of resolutions of the Sixteenth Executive Committee, (iii) the actions already undertaken in implementing the resource mobilization strategy of the platform adopted during the Executive Committee held in Bamako in November 2010, and (iv) inform members on the significant progress in the training of national experts in the use of African Livestock Sector Investment Toolkit (LSIPT) championed by the World Bank.

The scientific and technical presentations made by ILRI, CIRDES, PROGEBE, and the Universities of Zimbabwe, Harare and Stellenbosch in South Africa on the theme of the General Assembly were prior to the debates on the conservation, the preservation and the Sustainable Management of Animal Genetic Resources and their contribution to African livestock development in the continent.

Various partners of the platform, members of different caucuses informed the audience on the progress made in implementing the activities included in the triennial action plan 2010-2012 they are championing.

The session ended with the reading of a set of resolutions.

6th General Assembly

The Sixth General Assembly meeting was held in April 7, 2011 in AU-IBAR premises under the chairmanship of H.E. Tumusiime Rhoda Peace, African Union's Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, with the theme “Will African Animal breeds withstand the challenges of the 21st century?”

In his welcome remarks, the representative of the Kenyan Minister for Livestock Development, Honorable Aden Duale highlighted that indigenous breeds are more genetically diverse and stable and survive better under harsh environmental conditions including drought.

H.E Tumusiime, in her opening remarks advocated for the conservation and preservation of the African animal genetic resources as the conservation of animal genetic diversity in the long-term enable African countries and their farmers to better respond to changing environmental conditions and consumer preferences, to pursue new economic opportunities and to reduce their vulnerability to food shortages.

Before opening the debate on the theme of the meeting and other issues of importance to livestock development in Africa, the audience was welcomed informative presentations from Ms. Irene Hofmann (FAO), M. Ralph Kaufmann, representative of Director of FARA, Mr. Abdou Fall, the representative of Director of ILRI and Dr. Stephane Forman (World Bank) representing the donor caucus presenting the importance and the socio-economic role of African Animal Genetic Resources in the continent.

After adopting the recommentations, the participants agreed to meet for the 7th session of the General Assembly in 2012, at a date and place to be communicated..
